As TVA pursues opportunities to increase power generation to meet growing demand across our region, we have taken the next step in the review of the New Caledonia site in Lowndes County, Mississippi.
The Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS), which is part of the comprehensive National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process, was posted on TVA.com/NEPA and the Federal Register this week. The FEIS identifies the preferred alternative for building a Combustion Turbine Facility at the site. The proposed natural gas units would add approximately 500 MW to the grid.
Located on approximately 145 acres, the New Caledonia site previously served as a location for a gas facility that was constructed in 1998 and operated for several years by a private company.
The site is adjacent to a TVA substation and has infrastructure in place that can be updated to accommodate a modern natural gas facility.? TVA will make a decision on the proposed action in the next few months, based on the project purpose and need, potential environmental impacts, cost, schedule, technological and other considerations. To document the decision, TVA will issue a formal Record of Decision at that time.
