TVA’s Monitoring and Notification Center (MNC) will find a new home in the new Systems Operations Center (SOC) in Georgetown, Tennessee, in 2025. Currently split between two smaller dispatch centers in Chattanooga and Knoxville, this new secure location will allow for a more centralized approach in the monitoring of TVA facilities.
The MNC’s role is vital to everyday TVA operations. It serves as the primary notification point for security threats, law enforcement issues, fires or any incident with potential life safety impacts on all TVA personnel, assets, brand, or reputation. The center also serves as the primary notification point for Agency Level Situational Awareness Notifications, collaborating with 26 different TVA business units.
“The MNC is TVA’s 911. We’re here to protect TVA employees and TVA property,” said Kim West, Manager of the Monitoring and Notification Center.
The MNC’s new location in Georgetown will combine both TVA employees from Chattanooga and Knoxville into one centralized location, fostering a stronger sense of teamwork and morale.
“The new location will allow the employees to collaborate with each other and pool all their resources together. It will also give them a better representation all being in one centralized facility,” said Kim. “Currently there are often times where employees are working by themselves. This new facility makes sure that doesn’t ever happen.”
The Georgetown MNC will be equipped with brand-new technology, including state-of-the-art computers, iron horse chairs designed for better back support and electronic adjustable desks to allow for more functionality. Additionally, the MNC will feature its own kitchen and its own training room.
“It is a pretty big upgrade for the team,” said Tyler Youngblood, Operations Engagement Specialist.
Given that the team works 24/7 on-site shifts, creating a comfortable, supportive and safe work environment is a top priority.
The new MNC will also feature a new video wall for the team, featuring over 48 screens. This will allow for ample monitoring of situations happening across TVA property.
“This much larger board allows for more capability, more eyes on. If there’s inclement weather, the video board will allow us to monitor that alongside TVA facilities. It offers a whole swing of flexibility that we did not have before,” said Tyler.
“The resources we’re gaining from this new facility are incredibly valuable, and the impact is truly beyond measure,” said Kim.
