TVA has reached an important milestone at the new Cumberland Combined Cycle Plant: Unit 1 has achieved first fire, moving the project another step closer to serving the Valley region with more reliable, efficient energy.

First fire happened on April 28, when fuel was safely introduced and ignited inside the turbine for the first time. The turbine reached full speed under its own power, confirming that key systems — including fuel delivery and controls — are operating as expected.

To stay on schedule while final pipeline work wraps up, the team used compressed natural gas delivered by truck to complete the test — a safe, cost-effective approach that avoided significant delays. Permanent gas supply is expected on-site later this month.

Next steps toward serving the Valley region

With first fire complete, the team is preparing for the next phases of commissioning. Unit 1 is expected to synchronize to the grid in June, with both units targeted for commercial operation later this calendar year. When complete, the plant will add 1,450 megawatts of modern generation to TVA’s system.

“As we reach first fire at Cumberland, we’re taking another meaningful step toward unleashing American energy for the people and communities we serve,” said Sam Vinson, General Manager of Major Projects. “This plant represents the next generation of reliable, efficient power for the Valley region, and I’m proud of the teams who have worked tirelessly to bring us to this moment.”
