Making way for new technology and innovation as TVA prepares to meet growing electricity demand, TVA’s Demolition organization and contract partners safely imploded two inactive stacks and the selective catalytic reduction at Bull Run Fossil Plant in Claxton, Tennessee, on Saturday, June 28. The demolition marks the next step in the site’s decommissioning process, which began in December 2023 when TVA retired the single-generator, coal-fired unit.

TVA is actively evaluating emerging technologies with strong potential to become viable commercial energy sources in the coming decade at the site. This includes ongoing collaboration with community partners to pilot and advance ideas that address growing energy demand in real-world settings. One example is TVA’s work with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, local power companies and regional leaders to explore the potential deployment of fusion energy in East Tennessee. Another is the reuse of the Bull Run turbine bay for a synchronous condenser project, which leverages existing equipment to strengthen TVA’s transmission grid.
