East Region

East Region Team quick to mobilize, assist post-Helene

Helene’s weather system entered the TVA service area on Sept. 27 and dropped close to 20 inches of rain on some parts of the Valley region. In many locations, the flood of record was approached or exceeded. The Nolichucky River watershed, for example, received rainfall that was equal to about a 1-in-5,000-year rain event.

East Region staff – alongside internal TVA partners enterprise-wide – quickly mobilized to support both the immediate needs of impacted communities and long-term restoration efforts. The first weekend, the East Region Customer Relations and Community & Government Relations teams coordinated tangible assistance in the form of meal service for Mountain Electric Cooperative line worker crews, pallets of bottled water trucked to Newport, Tenn., and portable pumps provided by Industrial Tool Services to help supply raw water to Newport’s water treatment facility.

The extraordinary, around-the-clock efforts of TVA’s River Management and Dam Safety staffs leading up to and throughout Helene significantly mitigated additional damage and reflect the well-earned, world-class reputation of those respective teams.

The hearts of the entire East Region team go out to each and every individual touched by Helene’s impacts, and we’re committed to walking alongside them as they rebound, recover and rebuild.

Anderson County EMA Crews to benefit from TVA, Bull Run donation

On Sept. 5, employees with TVA donated close to 600 MREs – ready-to-eat meals – to the Emergency Management Agency of Anderson County, Tenn.

This recent MRE donation continues Bull Run’s recent history of giving back to organizations in Anderson and surrounding counties. In the last year, the plant has donated materials to the Anderson County Career and Technical Center, welding programs at area high schools and colleges, boilermaker apprenticeship programs and the Wartburg Volunteer Fire Department.

Maintenance completed at Browns Ferry and ongoing inspections at Wilson Lock

Browns Ferry’s Unit 1 is back on the grid following a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage that prepares the unit to supply the Tennessee Valley with safe, carbon-free energy for years to come. TVA employees and contracting partners completed more than 11,000 activities, including the replacement of two condensate pumps, six main steam relief valves and main steam inlet valves and panels. Additionally, numerous refurbishments and equipment inspections took place to strengthen the performance of Unit 1.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, after consultation with TVA, closed Wilson Lock to conduct inspections and possible repairs on the main lock chamber. The auxiliary lock, comprised of two 60’ x 300’ chambers in a stair stepped configuration, remains open and available for navigational use. The closure is a precaution to prevent further damage to the gates and any possible loss of the lock’s functionality. The USACE and TVA have a longstanding partnership to operate and maintain navigation facilities on the Tennessee River. More than 11.4M tons of goods make their way to and from the Ohio River every year through USACE managed locks on the Tennessee River.

100,000 cubic yards and counting – Eelgrass removal efforts continue this fall

Even as the seasons change, the joint effort to manage invasive eelgrass in Guntersville Reservoir will keep moving forward in public use areas. TVA’s Aquatic Plant Management team and its contractors have treated approximately 1,500 acres using EPA-approved herbicide and cut and harvested more than 250 acres of aquatic plants. Our partners, My Lake Guntersville and the W.E.T. Foundation, also treated nearly 900 acres on private residential and commercial areas along the shoreline of Lake Guntersville. As the harvester program continues through October, TVA expects to remove well over 100,000 cubic yards of floating eelgrass from the water.

This fall, researchers from Mississippi State University will begin herbicide trials on plant samples collected from Guntersville to see which ingredients are most effective at stopping the invasive species from spreading, a process that is expected to take three to four years.
